Location 1

This location is just below the fish hatchery. The area was covered in mostly grass, evergreen trees, leaf debris, fir needles, and horsetail ferns. The soil is firm, dark, muddy. In the water nearby are logs placed (some naturally, some intentionally), plenty of shaded areas, and a seemingly swift current. There was a colony of seals playing in the water nearby, insects, corvids, and seagulls. The sections we measured off to observe where approximately 10' from the shore, near a wooden walkway. Likely because of the proximity to human trails, there was a large amount of litter visible in every section we observed. Trees nearby included ash, beech, maple, Douglas fir. Nearby to observation sections both slime mold, polypores, and mycena were found. The substrate was predominantly wet, heavy soil, either spotted with leaves, conifer needles, and fallen branches or grassy with leaves. The majority of fungi found in this section were found on dead wood, implying a decomposing relationship with the soil.

The pH levels in the soil are reasonably consistent at this location, maintaining a level of 5, leaning slightly towards the acidic side. The water is somewhat more neutral at a level of six. The presence of fungi was very sporadic and depended greatly on the substrate in the area.

Section 1

The first section we observed was quite close to human activity and as such we found a good deal a trash and debris, as evidenced in this photo.

Section 2

The second section had the most litter of all, no fungi was found, and the soil was more sandy in this area.

Section 3

Most of the fungal fruiting bodies in this section were found as instances of crust fungi. The presence of dead wood as substrate differentiated this section, and added opportunity for wider variety.

Section 4

This section had the added substrate of conifer litter, and yet no fungal presence was found.

Section 5

Similarly to section 4, this area included conifer litter, and no fungi were observed.
